Ward: Basalt picks up fare baton

When a tourist asked her where the good restaurants were in Aspen, my local friend responded, “If you don’t have $300 to go out, Aspen is a food desert.”

Fortunately, Basalt is picking up the baton for affordable eateries. A couple of weeks ago, Mountain Heart cafe opened its doors on Main Street, with good coffee, tea and pastries, with sandwiches and local IPA and Pilsner in the back. And Wi-Fi.

Did I mention Wi-Fi? When I visited, the place was crowded with MacBook warriors, intently working on their novels, tech start-ups, and Wordle games. The café is spacious, yet somehow cozy. It reminded me of Hemingway’s “A Clean, Well-lighted Place” — with Wi-fi.

See you there!
