APSPA: Standing in solidarity with Park City

As board members of the Aspen Professional Ski Patrol Association (APSPA), we stand in solidarity with the Park City Professional Ski Patrol Association (PCPSPA) and their recent strike against Vail Resorts’ unfair labor practices. Their fight for fair wages highlights challenges faced by ski patrollers nationwide — challenges we also face as we enter our own contract negotiations in 2024.

Ski patrollers are essential to mountain safety, performing rescues, providing first aid, and mitigating hazards in extreme conditions. Yet, low wages, combined with the high cost of living in resort areas, make it nearly impossible to sustain a career in this critical profession. This leads to high turnover, depriving the industry of experienced patrollers who are vital to ensuring safety and a high standard of care on the slopes.

When resorts undervalue their patrollers, everyone on the mountain is affected. Experienced patrollers are irreplaceable, and their absence compromises the safety and enjoyment of skiers and snowboarders alike.

We urge the community to support ski patrollers in their fight for fair treatment and sustainable careers. Donations can be made to APSPA at APSPA.us and to PCPSPA through their GoFundMe page. Otherwise, spread the word by writing support letters to local papers and to ski area management teams. Help spread the message!

Ski patrollers dedicate themselves to keeping the mountains safe for everyone. It’s time they received the respect, dignity, and fair compensation they deserve. Together, we can help preserve the safety and quality of our slopes.
