Silverthorne Snowboarder suspended by national team following X Games Aspen arrest

U.S. Ski and Snowboard has suspended a professional snowboarder from the team after police arrested him on domestic violence charges last month during X Games Aspen.
Silverthorne resident Jake Canter, 20, had a disappointing performance at X Games, placing 8th — last place — in knuckle huck on Friday, Jan. 26. After the competition, Canter reportedly berated a woman on the drive back to their Snowmass Village condo before throwing her phone against a wall and pinning her to the bed, documents filed in Pitkin County district court allege.
Snowmass Village police arrested Canter the next day on domestic violence charges, including 3rd degree assault, a Class 1 misdemeanor; criminal mischief, a Class 1 misdemeanor; obstruction of a telephone service, a Class 1 misdemeanor; and harassment, a Class 3 misdemeanor, court documents state.
U.S. Ski & Snowboard said in a statement Friday that Canter has been suspended from the team pending the outcome of the charges.
Canter forwarded a voicemail from Summit Daily News seeking comment to a spokesperson.
“We believe that a thorough legal review of the facts, history, and information will prove these are false allegations,” spokesperson Taryn Langer said in an email.
The woman reportedly recorded audio of their argument on the drive back from Buttermilk Ski Area that night. In the recording, Canter can be heard “screaming” at the woman about her plans to go out with friends and “threatening her over and over” that their relationship will be over if she goes out, court documents state.
After the woman conceded she wouldn’t go out that evening, the argument continued at the condo, where she told police she retreated to the bedroom to get away from Canter, who followed despite being told to get away, according to court documents.
The woman reported that she attempted to climb out the window, but Canter grabbed her and threw her phone against the wall when she threatened to call police, court documents state.
Canter then climbed on top of the woman, who told police he sat on her legs while holding her down on the bed by her shoulders, according to court documents. At one point, the woman also reportedly threw Canter’s keys at him.
Canter admitted to throwing the phone and told police he grabbed the woman on the bed and told her to calm down, releasing her after she told him a few times to let go, court documents state.
Canter grew up in Evergreen, where he learned to snowboard in his backyard before honing his skills at Colorado’s resorts, according to his Red Bull athlete profile.
Last season, Canter placed 11th at the 2023 world championships in Bakuriani, Georgia. The event was Canter’s first world championship event of his career.
