The undefeated season for the Roaring Fork High School girls basketball team ended on Friday with a 78-40 loss to highly-ranked Cedaredge, which also came in undefeated.
That hole was dug by early mistakes from the Rams, which Cedaredge capitalized on to seize control. The Bruins quickly turned Roaring Fork’s gym into their own as their smaller but energetic fan base cheered them on.
“I know the girls,” Rams coach Mike Vidakovich said to the Glenwood Springs Post Independent after the loss. “They will regroup and be ready for our trip to Olathe tomorrow. They never gave up, regardless of the situation. They are never going to give up, so I’m always very proud of them. We can’t dwell on this one too much. Cedaredge is a really good basketball team, and I think they were more ready to play tonight than us, and that falls on me.”
The Rams did bounce back on Saturday, cruising to a 71-19 win over Olathe to improve to 11-1 overall. Roaring Fork will next play Tuesday at Aspen. The Skiers are 1-6 overall after a 36-33 victory over Grand Valley on Saturday got them in the win column.
The Basalt girls, playing a classification higher in 4A, fell to 2-10 overall after a 45-31 loss at Coal Ridge on Friday. The Longhorns head to Delta on Tuesday.
Boys basketball
Aspen boys basketball extended its win streak to four games with a 64-44 home win over Steamboat Springs on Friday. The Skiers are now 10-3 overall and a perfect 4-0 in Class 4A Western Slope League play. Up next, AHS heads to 5A Eagle Valley (11-3) on Tuesday in another big non-league clash.
Basalt boys basketball continued its roller coaster ways with a 61-56 loss at Coal Ridge on Friday. The Longhorns dropped to 5-6 overall and 1-1 in league play, with a trip to Delta coming up on Tuesday. Basalt travels to Aspen on Friday.
The Roaring Fork boys won their fourth straight game on Saturday, an 82-61 win at Olathe. They also beat Cedaredge on Friday, 67-33, in Carbondale. The Rams are now 9-3 overall (4-0 league) and next hosts Meeker on Saturday.

This is Aspen’s first varsity season after sitting out the past two to rebuild the program due to low numbers. The Skiers head to Glenwood Springs on Tuesday. The Demons are 11-0-1 and ranked No. 1 in the state by most metrics.
