Progress isn’t always about wins and losses, a lesson Basalt High School boys soccer coach Thomas Olson shared with his team following a 3-1 loss at Roaring Fork on Tuesday night.

“Truthfully, that score, 3-1, doesn’t really represent how well we played,” he said. “Those were great goals they scored, and we had some opportunities that we just couldn’t capitalize on. I’m not sad at all. I think our team played phenomenal.”

The last time the Longhorns played the Rams, back on Sept. 5 in Basalt, BHS lost 7-0. So, to make it to halftime trailing only 2-1 in the rematch against one of the strongest programs on the Western Slope was surely a sign of young players taking positive steps forward.

Jeffrey Ramos had the lone goal for Basalt, which tied the game at 1-1 midway through the first half.

“Our team really had a better mentality than we did the first time,” Olson said. “I felt that both teams played fantastic. It just so happens the tilt went Fork’s way. I think if we played another time, I think it might tip our way. It’s hard to say.”

Basalt fell to 4-5 overall. The Longhorns have six games remaining in the regular season, next being a home date with Vail Mountain (3-3-2) on Thursday. Game time is 4 p.m.

Roaring Fork improved to 5-2-1 and had been scheduled to play Wednesday night at Delta.

Aspen (3-4 overall) is back on the pitch Thursday with a game at Coal Ridge (5-3-1).

League play arrives for area football teams

Following a bye week, Basalt football (4-0) returns to the gridiron on Friday night with a game at Delta (3-1). Kickoff is 7 p.m. The contest is one of the most notable on the Western Slope this season, as it pits the undefeated Longhorns against the defending Class 2A state champion. It’s also the league opener (2A West) for both teams.

Delta lost its opener at Palisade, 30-27 but since has won three straight games over Gunnison (51-12), Rifle (49-0), and Alamosa (41-12). The Panthers are also coming off a bye week.

Basalt has tallied wins over Arvada (40-8), Rifle (42-12), Glenwood Springs (35-7), and Evergreen (26-0).

Aspen (2-2) plays on Friday night at Middle Park (1-3). Kickoff is also 7 p.m. in the league opener for both teams.

The Panthers beat Estes Park (27-6) in their opener but since have losses to Steamboat Springs (40-0), Rawlins (28-14), and Wheat Ridge (52-7).

The Skiers have had a roller coaster of a season, beating Grand Valley (28-8) in the opener before a 24-22 loss at a strong Steamboat team. Then came a rough home loss to Summit (22-6), followed by last week’s bounce-back win at Kent Denver (34-13).

Roaring Fork (2-2) hosts Grand Valley (0-4) on Friday in their league opener. Kickoff is 7 p.m. in Carbondale.

Glenwood (3-2) is hosting Conifer (3-1) at 7 p.m. Friday night.

Looking ahead at the rest

Volleyball teams return to action on Thursday. Aspen (6-5) plays at Coal Ridge (5-7), while Basalt (2-5) travels to Moffat County (6-9). Roaring Fork (3-9) is hosting Grand Valley (4-11) on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in Carbondale.

Basalt softball (5-13) returns from break with a game on Thursday at Aspen (0-10). First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. The Longhorns won the first meeting, 21-6, back on Sept. 10.

The Aspen cross country team is set to host its annual home event, the Chris Severy Invitational, on Saturday at its course near the high school. Middle school races are at 9 a.m. (girls) and 9:30 (boys), while high school varsity races are set for 10:15 (girls) and 11 (boys).

Following one final meet at Grand Junction Central on Saturday, Basalt tennis will join Aspen in regional play on Oct. 9-10, back in Grand Junction. The state tennis tournament is Oct. 17-19 in Pueblo.

The Class 3A state golf tournament is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday at Walking Stick Golf Course in Pueblo. After winning its regional on Monday at Snowmass Club, Aspen will send all four members to the two-day finale. Basalt, after finishing runner-up at regionals, will also send all four golfers.
