Football

The Aspen football team bounced back on Saturday, winning 34-13 at Kent Denver to close out non-league play. The Sun Devils dropped to 2-2 overall after beginning the year with back-to-back wins.

The Skiers improve to 2-2 overall, the other win coming in the Aug. 23 season opener against Grand Valley, 28-8. AHS then lost at 3A powerhouse Steamboat Springs (24-22) and then lost last week at home to Summit (22-6).

Next up, Aspen will head to Middle Park (1-3) on Friday night for the league opener. As for mutual opponents, the Panthers played Steamboat on Sept. 6, losing 40-0.

Basalt had the week off. The Longhorns (4-0) open league play Friday night at Delta (3-1) in what may be the game of the year in the Class 2A West league. The Panthers have won three straight games, including 49-0 over Rifle, since a season-opening loss to Palisade (30-27).

Delta is the reigning 2A state champion, having beaten Rifle in the title game a season ago, 54-14.

Roaring Fork (2-2) was also off this past week. The Rams host Grand Valley (0-4) on Friday night to open league play.

Basalt last won 7-0 over Fruita on Sept. 21. BHS plays at Grand Junction Central on Saturday.

AHS is scheduled to host Fruita Monument on Monday to close out the regular season. Regionals are Oct. 9 in Grand Junction and will include Basalt and Aspen competing.

Golf

The golf season has come down to the regional tournaments, which determine who qualifies for state. In a rarity, the Snowmass Club has stepped in to host this year’s regional tournament, featuring both Aspen and Basalt on Monday. Players tee off beginning at 10 a.m.
