Heightened impaired driving enforcement will occur across Pitkin and Eagle counties on Colorado Highway 82 starting on Friday, according to a Colorado State Patrol news release.

In addition to seeking signs of impaired driving, partnering agencies will look for speed, unsafe passing, and other aggressive driving behaviors, according to the release.

“Unsafe speeds can lead to a number of additional driving errors including the inability to maintain a safe lane position, and it reduces the amount of time both the speeding driver and those around them have to brake or move out of the way to avoid a collision,” the release states.

Lane violations, including unsafe lane changes, can cause particularly deadly results, according to the release. Troopers, deputies, and officers will be watching for these aggressive drivers on Highway 82.

“Colorado roadways see heavy traffic volume every season throughout the year, which only underscores the importance of sharing the road and following simple rules,” the release states. “Residents and travelers are asked to watch the posted speed limit while driving and eliminate distractions. In addition, the Colorado State Patrol wants you to pay attention behind the wheel and wear your seatbelt.”

Participating agencies include:

  • Colorado State Patrol
  • Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office
  • Aspen Police Department
  • Basalt Police Department
  • Eagle County Sheriff’s Office
