Aspen High boys lacrosse shows promise in season-opening rout of Eagle Valley

At least for the first game, the Aspen High School boys lacrosse team’s play on the field lived up to the potential the coaches see on paper.
Hosting Eagle Valley on Tuesday, the Skiers rolled 17-1 in their season opener, a near perfect start to what could be a promising spring.
“We have one of the best rosters we’ve had in many years,” said AHS coach Tommy Cox, who has led the program since 2019. “I am overly excited to see that we are living up — to some degree — to that roster, to what we should be doing. A lot of area for improvement today. Eagle Valley came and fought hard. We just got to make sure we iron out the details for the rest of the season.”
The Skiers had no issues with Eagle Valley, racing out to a 9-0 halftime lead on the AHS turf. The Devils’ lone goal came early in the third quarter when it was 10-0, although Aspen didn’t allow that play to turn into momentum for the visitors. AHS led 14-1 after three quarters.
It was an exciting start for a veteran team that hopes to make a deep postseason run for the first time in a handful of years.
“It’s a lot of seniority, a lot of guys with a lot of lacrosse experience,” Cox said. “A lot of these boys have been playing together their entire lives. We got a couple of guys back from boarding school that are a big addition. A lot of these guys, it’s their last shebang with high school lacrosse and I know they want to make it count.”
Aspen went 9-8 overall last spring after going 10-6 in 2023. The Skiers made the 2024 postseason as the No. 15 seed in Class 4A and beat No. 18 Grand Junction in the first round, 10-7.
The season ended in the second round for AHS with a 16-4 loss at No. 2 Cheyenne Mountain. No. 1 Erie won the 4A championship last spring over No. 7 Northfield, 14-6.
Now 1-0, the Skiers will next host Summit (0-0) on Friday (6 p.m. start). Eagle Valley is 0-2 after also losing at Crested Butte in their season opener on Saturday, 9-8. The Devils play Thursday at Vail Mountain.
“Before the game, we preached that we wanted to make sure we came out and played lacrosse,” Cox said. “Years past with Aspen, when presented with a game where we are winning heavily, we like to come out and just play backyard lacrosse. Just try to run by everybody and the idea here today was to make sure we get all the details ironed out, run our systems, and we definitely accomplished that.”
Before the AHS boys get to play Summit, the AHS girls lacrosse team will open its season on Thursday with a 6 p.m. home game against Summit. The Skiers went 11-6 last spring in their first season under head coach Kaely Wolf, with former head coach Amanda Trendell serving as the assistant.
Soccer season begins
The Basalt girls soccer season got underway on Saturday with a 4-0 loss at Longmont. BHS (0-1) will stay on the road with games Friday and Saturday against Crested Butte and Telluride. The Longhorns’ home opener is scheduled for March 20 against Aspen.
The Skiers (0-0) open their season on Friday against Telluride before playing Crested Butte on Saturday. These games will be played at Canyon View Park in Grand Junction.
