Jon Victor Sealander, 69, passed away Sunday, April 6, at his home in Basalt. He was born Sept. 16, 1938, to Clause Victor Sealander and Edith Johannessen Sealander in Idaho Falls, Idaho.
He grew up in New Sweden, Idaho, and attended Shelley schools. After graduating from high school in 1956, he attended Ricks College and ISU and pursued his interest in music and mechanics. In 1958 he joined the Army and was stationed in Germany for three years. He married Phyllis Sanders on Aug. 1, 1964, in Hamer, Idaho. They were later divorced.
He worked for the Aspen Skiing Co. in the Aspen area for over 40 years. During the summers he drove a snow cat, building ski trails for Snowmass Ski Resort, and during the winter he worked on the ski patrol and set up race courses until 2007. He was one of the original patrolmen at Snowmass. He made many good skiing friends over the years. He loved ski racing and won the Geritol Cup in 1982.
He also had a great passion for auto racing, British cars, motorcycles, boxing and history. He was fortunate to be able to live out his dreams of building his own home in the mountains of Colorado, racing cars and making a career of skiing.
He is survived by his mother of Idaho Falls; three brothers, Robert (Robin) Sealander of Ormond Beach, Fla., David Sealander of Idaho Falls, and Karl (Evelyn) Sealander of Salem, Utah; and one sister, Elisa (Darryl) Parks of Ballwin, Mo. His father preceded him in death.
Visitation will take place from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 19, at Nalder Funeral Home in Shelley. Services will follow at 1 p.m. Burial will be at the New Sweden Cemetery. The American Legion will perform military rites.
